BACKGROUND The
ASIM was developed as
part of a responsive space research effort to provide standard approaches for
interfacing equipment on a satellite to a control computer. The ASIM
provides sensor and control communication over a SPA (Space Plug-and-Play Avionics) communication channel using lower speed SPA-U (USB) or higher
speed SPA-S (spacewire). The module can be used in the design of new equipment or in the adaptation of existing
equipment. The designer could euphemistically ‘stick’ the ASIM to the
back end of a sensor design for adaptation to the new standard, resulting in
the term Appliqué Sensor Interface Module (ASIM). The ASIM in this context
is an electronic component which contains the SPA interfaces, a local processor, and
a set of standard input and output capabilities. The module should be viewed from the outside as a black box, more or less the same as any other subsystem integrated circuit which might be designed into electronic equipment.
