SUPPORT PAGE FOR USERS OF THE AFRL RESPONSIVE SPACE
APPLIQUÉ SENSOR INTERFACE MODULE (ASIM)

BACKGROUND

The ASIM was developed as part of a responsive space research effort to provide standard approaches for interfacing equipment on a satellite to a control computer.  The ASIM provides sensor and control communication over a SPA (Space Plug-and-Play Avionics) communication channel using lower speed SPA-U (USB) or higher speed SPA-S (spacewire).  The module can be used in the design of new equipment or in the adaptation of existing equipment.  The designer could euphemistically ‘stick’ the ASIM to the back end of a sensor design for adaptation to the new standard, resulting in the term Appliqué Sensor Interface Module (ASIM).  The ASIM in this context is an electronic component which contains the SPA interfaces, a local processor, and a set of standard input and output capabilities.  The module should be viewed from the outside as a black box, more or less the same as any other subsystem integrated circuit which might be designed into electronic equipment.

This page provides users of the Generation One ASIM with the latest design information and tools.  This version of the ASIM is no longer actively supported by Data Design and has limited support at AFRL.  The information on this site is therefore somewhat out of date, but it still serves as a reasonable introduction to this line of research.  We understand that the SPA concept is being moved to another level of technology readiness at AFRL and research will continue under another name.   However, Data Design still welcomes inquires about the ASIM and would be happy to discuss any potential applications of the underlying technology.  Users should always feel free to contact Data Design directly or through our home page.
